Habitual Silence

The desires of indulgence can externalize in a variety of ways. Our tendencies can fall victim to the hostility of this world, or rather, we can alter our glutinous desires to indulge in something more favorable to the soul.

Firm spiritual boundaries are an admirable quality of those who live a monastic lifestyle. The walls in which they live behind not only signify physical boundaries; however, they represent the emotional boundaries that those living within a convent adhere to. As someone living between the two worlds, I often find myself tempted by this idea. Balancing between a world that does not respect spiritual boundaries and a world that is governed by them feels as if I am somehow residing in a state of delusion. For in one world I am told that boundaries are simply rules created by an entity for the purpose of establishing an overbearing control. A leviathan with hostile intentions. However, the chaos and disorder residing within this alleged sovereign reality is profound. Identities are fragmented while the uncertain souls are searching for a purpose. This world of disorder promises freedom; yet, how can one feel free in an anarchical state?

Boundaries that govern and guide are essential to the stability of the soul. One cannot find true rest if they remain in a mindset of fight-or-flight. Altering paradigms to adhere to modernity only generates more disorder. Yet we question why as society progresses, we simply find ourselves further away from the essence of life. Our movements are befuddled with altruistic ideals. Promising a benefit for the greater good; yet, foundational guiding principles are lacking. This simply generates finite slogans that cause further slander and division.

For why is it that we find boundaries so limiting? Why is it that when we are commanded to curb our indulgences, that we feel triggered to react with a sense of obstinacy. For often it is within the confines of our own heart where we find the answers to our wandering minds. Rather than consuming the chaos, we can indulge in the stillness. Satisfying our insatiable desires in the simplicity of Christ. The simplicity of silence.
